As the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally,
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is one of the romantic era’s finest composers. Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony will be featured by the Signature Symphony at Tulsa Community College in the 2019-2020 Signature Classics season opener. The performance is 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019 at the VanTrease Performing Arts Center for Education on the TCC Southeast Campus located at 81st Street and Highway 169.
“The number five is a common theme this season as I mark my fifth season as Signature Symphony’s music director. To help celebrate, I have chosen three iconic Fifth Symphonies, starting with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E minor,” said Andrés Franco, Signature Symphony at TCC music director.
Also part of the evening, Russian composer, Mikhail Glinka and the Overture from his opera “Ruslan and Lyudmila.” Then the music shifts to the U.S. as the featured guest artist, Jeff Midkiff, performs his own mandolin concerto, “From the Blue Ridge,” which blends bluegrass, jazz and swing influences.
“Midkiff is a wonderful mandolin player, and Signature Symphony is thrilled to be the first orchestra in Oklahoma to feature his original concerto,” said Franco.
Before every Classics concert, Signature Symphony’s Open Rehearsal allows music lovers of all ages to experience a professional orchestra rehearsal and interact with our conductor, musicians and guest artists. The Open Rehearsal is a free event and begins at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 26, 2019.
