Description

Animal People: Lecture with Dan Musgrave

Thursday, January 24, 9:30 - 10:45 am

What does it mean to be an 'Animal person'? For that matter, what does it mean to be a person? Drawing upon his experiences learning from and with animals, Dan Musgrave intends to show the varied methods, both scientific and literary, he has used to explore and challenge the perception of human uniqueness. This lecture will employ examples from his work studying apes in captivity and the wild, and incorporate them with insights from his studies of cultural anthropology. Musgrave will suggest moving beyond Levi-Strauss's witticism that "Animals are good to think with” to come to a fuller, more empathic understanding of the nonhuman people that share our Earth.
