Get the picture: The horror! The horror!

The Oklahoma Horror Film Festival is set to spook film-goers this month.

OK, admittedly, Halloween is not until next month, but movie-goers who favor ghouls, guts, murder, mayhem and other such wholesome, family-friendly pursuits will nevertheless want to know that the Oklahoma Horror Film Festival is scheduled for Sept. 3-5 at the SpiritBank Event Center in Tulsa.

More than 40 new and independent horror films will be screened, both features and shorts among them, and several other happenings are planned as well — e.g., music from an on-site disc jockey; a vendor hall with all manner of horrific arts and crafts for sale; various workshops, panels, giveaways, “industry VIP” appearances, etc. Click here for more information.

This first-ever Oklahoma Horror Film Festival arrives courtesy of one Joel Hulett, a former local attorney who also has a film production company in Tulsa called Dolphin Bay Films. Hulett is the general manager of this firm; the CEO is Jack Clark.

As Hulett told me recently: “The festival evolved from the filmmaking direction Jack and I started with Dolphin Bay. Horror films have a hearty niche following, and with a strong group of films from all over the world, the fan base will travel cross-country for a full weekend of the newest horror fare. We’re launching a distribution company soon, Black Mesa Entertainment, and (this) film festival also puts us in early contact with bright new filmmakers and screenwriters. … We think we will have one of the best offerings of horror films in the nation.”

In other words, look for a big crowd here. You say, “Labor Day weekend.” I say, “Jam-packed cinematic bloodbath.”

To each his own.
