A celebration of books
OSU-Tulsa event will feature writers from across the country.
The book world is aquiver about Steig Larsson and other Scandinavian mystery writers. My prediction is that Oklahoma writers will be the next literary hot spot. You can meet and listen to many of our state’s mystery writers at the Celebration of Books on Sept. 24-25, presented by the Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers at OSU-Tulsa.
William Bernhardt, for example, will lead a session on plot and structure on Sept. 24 at 11:00 a.m. Bernhardt has written more than 20 novels, his most popular have been the lawyer/detective Ben Kincaid series. He says he has written the very last one, “Capitol Betrayal.” There is a season for all endeavors, and Bernhardt has already tested the waters with non-mystery fiction, too. “The Code of Buddyhood” is a rewarding departure from mysteries.
No one is more experienced to lead a workshop on plot and structure. He conducts writing seminars across the nation and has proven his skills with many published books. He is a publisher, as well, and can guide aspirants through the “how to get published” mystique.
Reading mysteries that take place in Tulsa is always intriguing for a Tulsa reader. We have a personal connection that a reader in Boston will never understand. Here is an excerpt from “Capitol Offense” (Ballantine, 2009):
“The sun was just beginning to rise in the east, toward TU campus and beyond. ….The city was waking….All the good-hearted people. All the families, the lovers, the children, all involved in their own lives and all apart of one another’s, fitted together like glittering tiles in a huge mosaic. This was when he loved Tulsa best.”
Other mystery writers appearing at the event are JoAnna Carl, Sally Goldenbaum, and Carolyn Hart.
