Rod Stewart cancelled - so what?

There is always something else to do.

Last week, I talked about the one-year anniversary of the BOK Center. And last week marked the first big last-minute cancellation of a BOK Center event. Because of illness, Rod Stewart, of “Maggie May” and “Forever Young” fame, cancelled his Aug. 20 performance. A lot of fans were upset, and rightly so.  Many probably drove from surrounding areas. Hotels were booked, cars were rented — not a fun situation. But here is where I say, who cares about Rod Stewart? Not the person, but the event. There was a time in Tulsa’s not-too-distant past that it would have been a huge thing to even get Rod Stewart in the first place. Now he was just another act in a week that also included Sir Paul McCartney and Lil’ Wayne.

We will move on.

There’s really no time to linger in the sadness caused by Stewart’s sudden change in plans. Sorry, Rod, but there’s just too much going on. From sporting events to music and everything in between, Tulsans are really putting their creative scheduling skills to use. I remember the early years of this decade, when I would scour the local papers and Internet, looking for something fun and interesting to do. Now, just a short time later, I often have to pick something to miss. What a change.

So I want to say that I am sorry to Rod Stewart’s fans. I am sure you missed a great show, but I am equally certain that he will make his way back at some point to make amends. But by that time, you will have had the chance to see a ton of other great shows. And it’s about damn time.
