My take on the WNBA
The Detroit Shock prepares to make Tulsa its new home.
When I heard that we were really getting Detroit's WNBA team, I wasn't quite sure how I felt about it. I certainly knew that it would be a good thing, but I wasn't yet able to express why I felt that way.
Unfortunately, I can't say I was surprised by the apathy and mockery that came from much of the general public. The WNBA has been a target of ridicule since its inception in 1996. In the 13 years that have followed, although there have been some high points, the organization as a whole hasn't been able to garner the respect it deserves. But popular or not, they are here now.
And even though I may be completely off base, I really do feel that the WNBA will succeed in Tulsa. In cases like this, the one thing we really have going for us is a constant underlying self-esteem problem. We feel that we are always the underdog, fighting to get a place at the table with the other relevant American cities.
While you may see this as a fault, I see nothing but opportunity. Remember when the BOK Center first opened? Many were already declaring it a failure. But not only have we proved the naysayers wrong, we have turned that building into one of the most successful venues in the entire country. So when I heard many people moaning about the WNBA, I knew that we would be fine. Sounds crazy, right? That's just how we roll.
See you at the first tip-off.
