A step in the right direction

A new grocery store will open in north Tulsa.

Anyone who follows this column knows that one of the things I am constantly (perhaps annoyingly?) talking about is the glaring absence of a grocery store downtown.

I am happy to say that we are now seeing some real progress in this area. It was recently announced that the now-vacant building at East Pine Street and North Peoria Avenue that once housed an Albertsons will now be called Gateway Market.

The best part of this, outside of the convenience it will offer to area residents, is that the store will be completely local. Antonio Perez, owner of Tulsa’s Las Americas stores, has gotten the ball rolling. The owner is local. The capital is coming from a local bank (ONB). And the money we spend on soda and steaks will remain in the community.

We can only hope that this will be just the beginning and that this trend will continue into the heart of downtown. Where might someone put that store downtown? Um, how about that big, empty Homeland on Denver Avenue? Just an idea, folks.

It’s nice to be talking about something that is actually happening instead of something I wish were happening. Let’s do this more often.
