‘The Best Party in Town’ takes on patriotic theme
Mental Health Association Oklahoma’s annual Carnivale fundraiser supports veterans confronting homelessness.
Talmadge Powell of TPC Studios, Carnivale Co-chairs Ted and Shiela Haynes, and Todd Pyland of TPC Studios discuss details of Carnivale 2018: Stars and Stripes.
Organizing ‘The Best Party in Town’
Organizers behind Mental Health Association Oklahoma’s annual Carnivale fundraiser have spent the past year planning a special celebration to support those confronting veteran homelessness due to mental health and substance abuse issues.
Carnivale 2018: Stars and Stripes will welcome hundreds of guests to the Cox Business Center on March 24 for a World War II-themed victory party. Event co-chairs Ted and Shiela Haynes teamed up with TPC Studios to create a nostalgic evening of dinner and dancing. The 16-piece band Liquid Blue will play Big Band tunes during the meal. “After dinner, the band will continue with Carnivale’s signature dance party,” Shiela says.
In collaboration with Mental Health Association staff and a committee of volunteers, more than 50 people have dedicated at least 500 hours in preparation. TPC Studios representatives say highlights will be kept a surprise until the night of the event.
Helping those served by MHAO
Carnivale organizers hope to raise $1.2 million to directly benefit the Mental Health Association’s Housing First program. The nationally recognized model provides housing and other support services to individuals in need who have mental health conditions.
Behind this year's patriotic theme
The Haynes are closely connected to veteran initiatives and suggested the Stars and Stripes theme to spotlight homeless veterans. They are proud parents of a son, Carter, in the U.S. Army, and Shiela is the niece of a Vietnam veteran who once struggled with homelessness. She says Carnivale 2018 will honor those like her uncle who served their country. “We want to capture the spirit of optimism that existed in the nation at the end of World War II.”
