I am Tulsa - Andrea Myers

Corporate communications specialist for Williams and a member of Tulsa's Young Professionals.

To those who did not know their mission, this quintet probably looked like any other group of friends chatting away at Cherry Street’s Full Moon Café.

But soon this original group of five started talking to other friends. And then they made connections with people from different parts of the community.

Eventually, a member of that original group, Andrea Myers, noticed that the small gathering had multiplied. The hope of creating a group for Tulsa’s young professionals was rapidly become a reality.

“I didn’t know exactly how it would turn out,” says Myers, the first chair of Tulsa’s Young Professionals (TYPros). “I knew it was something powerful and a great opportunity, but I didn’t know it would grow that quickly.”

Soon, there was not enough tortilla soup or tables and chairs to hold everyone who was attending the meetings. By the end of Myers’ year as chair of the organization, TYPros boasted more than 1,000 members.

“It was exciting to be able to step down from my position as chair and see it wasn’t just me and my four friends anymore,” Myers says.

Aside from multiplying those five friends into an organization of thousands, Myers has seen TYPros grow in other ways since it first began in 2005.

“In the beginning, we weren’t taken seriously by established leaders of the community,” she says. “Now established leaders are beginning to see TYPros members as being able to bring something valuable to the table.”

Over the past five years, TYPros members have made their mark on the city that has shaped Myers into the young and ambitious woman she is today. Although she currently lives with her husband and two children in Claremore, Myers considers Tulsa her second home. She graduated from The University of Tulsa, received an internship in downtown Tulsa and currently works as a corporate communications specialist for Williams. She has also spent much of her playtime in Tulsa.

“I was raised in rural Claremore, so I just love the feeling of downtown Tulsa,” she says. “There’s something about the energy and history there.”

When Myers is not at work or at home with her 19-month-old son, Quentin, she is spreading her love for Tulsa to her 10-year-old daughter, Lilly. Girls’ night out for these two includes dinner at McNellie’s and a show at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.

As Myers and her daughter enjoy downtown Tulsa, whether they realize it or not, they walk past places that have been touched by TYPros members. And at the heart of TYPros are the original five friends who made sure that vision became a reality.

I am dedicated to Tulsa because I love it here. And I’m not going anywhere. My family is here. My friends are here. There’s a lot to love about Tulsa and Oklahoma. And since I plan to be here a while, I might as well help to make it the best it can be.

I am a member of Tulsa’s Young Professionals because I think it’s important to attract and retain young people in our city and state. And TYPros is helping to do that by connecting people with their community. Once people get a taste of the great things Tulsa has to offer, and then feel more connected to it, they’re more likely to want to do something to make things better. And whether they do that through TYPros or another organization, it doesn’t matter except that it’s done. Oh, and I’m a member because I like to have fun.

I am passionate about downtown Tulsa.

I am looking forward to seeing how downtown will change when ONEOK Field opens. There will be a lot of new developments and hopefully some more retail. Plus, there’s still more to happen near the BOK Center.

I am proudest of my family. Professionally, I’m proud of helping to create TYPros five years ago with some really great friends.

I am an asset to Tulsa because I bring a new set of ideas and perspectives into every aspect of Tulsa that I touch — my job, my volunteer work, my social scene. And Tulsa needs everyone’s best effort and innovative ideas to be an even greater city.

Myers is a founding member of TYPros and co-chair of the TYPros Fifth Anniversary Party in April. She enjoys spending time with her family watching college basketball together, going to see shows at the Performing Arts Center and spending time with extended family members.
