To tweet or not to tweet

@TulsaPeople joins Twitter.

TulsaPeople Magazine jumped on the Twitter bandwagon late last year. I have to admit, the first few days were like being at the dinner table between my mom and sister—noisy and overwhelming. However, after some time, I was able to learn to navigate the Twitter world and interact with our readers on a more personal level.

If you aren’t on Twitter but want to tweet along with everyone else, here are a few bits ofadvice to help get you started:

  1. Set up your account Include your real name and photo for a personal touch. Twitter is for connecting real people, so the more information you can provide about yourself, the better.
  2. Learn to navigate Twitter’s viewing panel is not the easiest setup to familiarize with, however, it does not take long to understand how it works. The long list of tweets are friends’ tweets in real time. Thrown into the loop are all the replies you’ve sent to them, as well. Lastly, the @ symbol allows Twitter to identify a username, which indicates when users mention or talk to other users in their tweets.
  3. Make some friends Share your username with your friends and search for new friends using Twitter’s search tool. As your network grows, take a trip out of our comfort zone and befriend users with common interests. There are many groups and businesses on Twitter that can help you learn more about your favorite hobby and keep you informed with all the latest news headlines.
  4. Tweet loud and proud Say what’s on your mind but keep it short—Twitter limits each tweet to 140 characters. As you become more familiar, try using Tulsa-based TwitPic, which allows users to upload photos to their tweets. You can also insert links to some of your favorite things found on the Web, including articles and Web sites.

Good luck with your new Twitter adventures. If you would like a cool user to follow or have any questions, DM (direct message) or @ reply @TulsaPeople.
