Worth reading: Summer reading list
Our list of recommended reading contains authors set to speak in Tulsa this summer.
The author of “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” Audrey Niffeneger will speak at Philbrook Museum on July 13. Her newest novel is “Her Fearful Symmetry.”
Summer reading conjures up lazy afternoons lakeside or by the pool with a frivolous book – little substance, thank you, only escapism. The electrifying “The Burning Wire” by Jeffery Deaver, who spoke June 17 at the Tulsa Library downtown, is the perfect start for your summer reading list.
Deaver is a master at the thriller genre.
Our summer list, tailored to Tulsans, follows Deaver with authors who will speak in Tulsa courtesy of BookSmart. Hear the author speak, buy the book and get it signed. No better way to spend your summer.
Best known for “The Bone Collector” (1999) which was made into a movie, Deaver’s “The Burning Wire” is about a terrorist manipulating the New York City electric grid for ill. The police detective, Lincoln Rhyme, a quadriplegic, along with his assistant and lover Amelia Sachs, solve the crime.
Deaver, educated as an attorney, said in his Tulsa talk that he looks upon writing as a business. He writes to amuse his readers. Like Elmore Leonard, he follows the successful formula of short chapters (four pages each) no adverbs and a twist or two at the end. He is a meticulous researcher. In “The Burning Wire,” you will learn more about electricity than you want to know. For example, did you know that a hair dryer carries more amps than an electric chair?
