Get the picture: Movie music

"A Night at the Movies" features the Starlight Big Band and the music of film with a bonus viewing of a classic Laurel & Hardy short.

Here’s something fun (and free) to plan on for tonight (July 20th): “A Night at the Movies” with the Starlight Big Band at the River West Festival Park (at 2100 South Jackson, in Tulsa; on the west bank of the Arkansas River). This is the next concert scheduled in Starlight’s free-to-the-public series of summertime performances, a great local tradition that goes back to the 1940s. The theme for this show, as you might’ve guessed, is movie music. The concert begins at 8 p.m. So why not bring some friends, lawn chairs, and a picnic basket (don’t forget the drinks, and the ice) and make a night of it?

For the first half of the program, the big band will play classic movie themes, and then (after an intermission) the Laurel and Hardy film known as “The Music Box” will be screened with live theater-organ accompaniment. This 1932 movie actually won an Oscar back in the day for “Best Short Subject: Comedy.” Should be a good time.
