Where to see art in Tulsa this month.
Taking a cue from a Paul Newman film, the Pearl Gallery started its submission-based “Long, Hot Summer” show four years ago. As the gallery’s only themed show, “Long, Hot Summer” traditionally showcases nude artwork. This year, co-founder Janet Edwards added whimsy to the mix to give artists who don’t work with nudes more options. J.T. DeShong, Shawn Wilson, Allie Jensen, Tim Lang and Bryan Cooper are a few of the artists represented at the show this year. “Long, Hot Summer” opens Wednesday, June 30 from 5-8 p.m. and will be on display through July 29.

“Strange Times: Paintings by Zac James Heimdale” will open July 2 at the Tulsa Artists’ Coalition Gallery and run through July 31. Heimdale takes inspiration from painters such as Paul Klee, Willem De Kooning and Francis Bacon. His new work focuses on the spectacle of simulacrum — a concept popularized by philosopher Jean Baudrillard that implies everything is merely a copy of a copy. Heimdale explores this idea by using the figure as a symbol for the figure, thus drawing attention to the artifice of reality. “By doing this,” Heimdale elaborates, “I hope to find some sort of dialogue between the inherent sensuality (history) of the figure and my own confrontational aesthetic.”
The opening reception takes place from 6-9 p.m., July 2.
- Tulsa Artists’ Coalition Gallery, 9 E. Brady St.
Artist Wendeline Matson will show new work all month long at M.A. Doran Gallery. Matson begins with the concept of a still life and then abstracts elements in each of her paintings to allow other qualities to take on a more predominate role. Her vivid, avant-garde color compositions combine realistic and expressionistic perspectives to form unpredictable views of the ordinary. “Ideas for my paintings evolve from the experiences I have, colors that inspire me and the objects that surround me every day,” Matson explains. “I take these and put them together as a still life. The still-life setting is my outlet.”

July 10 marks the 2nd Saturday event at Jenks’ RiverWalk Crossing. From noon-8 p.m. enjoy live music and local arts. An outdoor market will feature pottery, glass works, mosaics, jewelry, sculpture and more.
- 300 RiverWalk Terrace, Jenks
Kevin Pyle will launch his collection of fine art music photography, entitled “Triggers,” with an opening reception from 6-9 p.m., July 17, at Dwelling Spaces. The name “Triggers” comes from photography’s ability to trigger memories and emotions. “People don’t realize how much music is intertwined with their daily lives,” he says. “It’s interesting to hear what memories and emotions are triggered when people see the photos.”
- Dwelling Spaces, 119 S. Detroit Ave.
