President and founder of Check-6 Inc.
Brian “Bru” Brurud found his inner entrepreneur early in life: as a high school student in Bartlesville with a horseshoeing business. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in geology, flying 10 different types of aircraft and earning the title of most-decorated U.S. Naval Fighter Pilot since the Vietnam War, Brurud tapped his eclectic set of skills to found the Jenks-based company Check-6 Inc.
An academic white paper, or report, discussing the benefits of applying aircraft carrier safety procedures to the oil and natural gas industry was the motivating idea that brought Check-6 to life. The company employs former fighter pilots, astronauts and special forces operatives and applies their knowledge and experience to offshore drilling and other high-risk industries to improve safety, reliability and efficiency.
Check-6’s effectiveness is apparent: In 2011, Inc. magazine named it one of the 5,000 fastest-growing private companies in America, and it has been named to other lists and earned other awards as well.
Traveling around the world to drilling locations is a major part of the job for Brurud, so he does not have an actual desk of his own at the Check-6 office.
However, one-of-a-kind career “souvenirs” decorate every room, hallway and even the restroom. Here are a few examples ...
