Dude looks like a lady
These monthly models are not what you’d expect.
The idea seemed like a hard sell: Talk 12 Tulsa Moose Lodge members into donning women’s clothing — anything from a fruit-covered Carmen Miranda headdress to a leather bikini — and posing for a calendar. However, when Nick Aston pitched the concept to his Loyal Order of the Moose comrades, they jumped at the opportunity.
“They were excited about it the very first time,” he says.
The calendar idea originated when Aston and his wife, Mary, were reflecting on a spring 2008 Moose Lodge event called “The Gong Show,” during which several members dressed as women, eliciting unanimous laughs from the audience.
“Something about seeing a man dressed up as a woman is funny,” Mary says.
Funny enough that she and Nick thought a calendar might be a good way to raise funds for the lodge, as well as for two national charities of Moose International — Mooseheart Child City & School, for children and teens in need, and Moosehaven, a retirement community for Moose members.
The photo shoots began in late summer 2008 at the lodge. The resulting calendar features a mix of French sisters Fifi and Cici, poodle skirt-clad Peggy Sue, huntress Fredrica and aspiring rock star Nikki, played by Nick himself. Using costumes made or donated by Mary or other lodge members, the result is a series of photos that Nick says turned out just as he had hoped.
“We kept it classy, if you can call something like this classy,” he says.
The calendars were officially released to lodge members at a Nov. 1 show and dance, during which each “calendar girl” was introduced in costume. Nick says he initially ordered 300 calendars, which sold for $15 each, and by mid-December, the lodge was discussing a second order. The calendars have been so popular that Nick may present follow-up fund-raising projects for the lodge’s board to consider. They include a calendar girls poster, as well as a DVD or CD with video and photos from the calendar photo shoots and release party. Although he won’t be recreating the project immediately, he doesn’t rule out a calendar girls reunion.
“It’s really hard to pick a favorite month,” he says. “Each one was so fun.”
