Local retailers say a convertible crib is one of the biggest trends in nursery design. It can be converted into a toddler-size and then a full-size bed.
One of the biggest nursery design trends is espresso-stain baby furniture, says Melissa Winters, owner of Baby Emporium. A few years ago, the trend was black furniture, she says, adding that the espresso stain is softer and more versatile in terms of bedding. Anything camouflage for boys, hot pink or zebra designs for girls and extra-soft “mink-y” fabrics are also popular for bedding, which Winters says her store can custom order.
Sherri Isbell, owner of Peek a Boo Baby, says custom bedding is popular in her store. Isbell says black-and-white bedding is a favorite, with touches of either blue or hot pink.
“We still do a lot of blue and brown but spiced up, more like an animal print,” she says.
Isbell says the designs have become more sophisticated and with a more grown-up flavor to the choices. Roses, polka dots, paisley and retro prints are all popular, with baby ducks taking a back seat to new trends.
Baby best sellers
BABY EMPORIUM
Sleep Sheep — The small plush toy emits four soothing sounds: a mother’s heartbeat, ocean waves, whale songs and rain showers.
Anything camo for boys or University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University themed for children are big sellers at Baby Emporium, owner Melissa Winters says.
DING-BATS
Snuza Halo monitor — The monitor detects a baby’s breathing movement, owner Nicole Randolph says. If the baby is absolutely still for 15 seconds, the monitor will vibrate to alert the child. If after another five seconds the child is still motionless, an alarm will sound for the caregiver.
Pacimals — This popular line of pacifiers comes complete with a plush toy that allows any child an easy-to-grasp friend that helps the pacifier stay in place.
GAGA!
T-Town Drilla T-shirt — This shirt, available in sizes from 3 months to kids 14, is a fun adaptation by Valentin Esparza of Tulsa’s famous Golden Driller and is a great gift for any Tulsa kid, manager Cara Crain says.
“ABC in Tulsa” book — Featuring all things Tulsa, this book for children teaches the alphabet by using city landmarks.
PEEK A BOO BABY
Nap Nanny — Formerly only sold through medical supplier companies, the Nap Nanny is a small chair that keeps a baby at a 30 degree angle, which helps relieve gas, colds, ear infections and a number of other conditions. Sherri Isbell says Peek a Boo Baby is the only store in Tulsa to carry the product.
Tummy Tub — A popular item in Europe for years, the Tummy Tub is now making a splash in Tulsa. The small tub is known to relieve fussiness and colic while the child sits in warm water in the
comfortable fetal position.
