Grove Elementary students celebrate their win as the top-reading Tulsa County school in the Reading Tree Challenge at an assembly May 24 at their school.
Grove Elementary students read more than 120,000 books as part of the Gathering Place Reading Tree Challenge, an initiative of the new park to encourage literacy across Tulsa County.
“Any new perspective on getting children to read gets us excited,” says Brandy McCombs, who teaches first and second grades at Grove. “The connection to the community and a park made all of this a perfect fit.”
Park Director Tony Moore says Tulsa County public school students will play a role in the Gathering Place’s opening ceremonies. He says he is confident Tulsa-area children will meet the challenge goal to read 2 million books by the park’s Sept. 8 opening date.
