2010 Gatesway Balloon Festival Sing with us: “Up, up and away in my beautiful, my beautiful ballooooon!” There will be many beautiful balloons on view at the annual Gatesway Balloon Festival. Pack up the entire family and head to Cherokee Casino’s Will Rogers Downs in Claremore to enjoy food, children’s activities, pony and carriage rides, arts and crafts vendors, a car and motorcycle show, balloon rides and live entertainment. And don’t miss the balloon glow Aug. 6-7 — the sight of dozens of balloons glowing on a summer evening is nothing short of breathtaking. Cherry Street Farmers’ Market salsa contest If you’re like us, you have risen early many a Saturday morning to enjoy the splendor of the Cherry Street Farmers’ Market. From fruits and veggies to cheeses and baked goods, the bi-weekly events offer a smorgasbord of fresh, local foods. Of course, one of the questions you might ask upon purchasing these items: What should I make with them? On Aug. 7, the answer is, salsa. From 9-11 a.m., the Cherry Street Farmers’ Market Association will present a salsa contest with five categories: traditional and nontraditional for adults and children and a strictly farmers’ market salsa. Rather eat than cook? For $2, you can purchase a tasting kit to taste and judge the entries. Winners will receive market coupons redeemable at both the Cherry Street and Brookside farmers’ markets.
