Top 10 with Michael Brothers
Owner and stylist at Michael Brothers Hair
Michael Brothers’ interest in the hair industry began when he was just 16 years old. He was inspired by the way a great haircut can make anyone feel like a rock star, a fashionista, a diva, a model or even simply the best version of him or herself.
A client of celebrity stylist Sally Hershberger since 2003, Brothers considers her a mentor.
“I go get a haircut and spend time in the salon observing and asking questions,” he says. “She is a genius … always very pleasant.”
Today, Brothers is the owner of Michael Brothers Hair, which caters to Tulsa’s own celebrities.
“As an owner, my favorite aspect (of my job) would be having a role as a mentor to young, upcoming stylists and being a part of helping them be their best,” he says.
Brothers began in the industry selling retail products and worked his way into an apprentice program that enabled him to become a licensed stylist. Well into his 13th year as a stylist, he and partner Amanda Fields opened Michael Brothers Hair in June 2003.
Brothers now has 12 on staff and says he always keeps his eyes open for talent.
“I believe that we are the team that can cater to any individual … each member is at a different level of both talent and experience,” he says.
Although getting an appointment with Brothers is rumored to be nearly impossible, the stylist refutes this claim.
Michael’s Top 10:
1. Kerastase Double Force: This multi-protective spray does everything. It has a UV filter, it conditions and provides amazing, flexible hold for my hair during my 13-hour work days.
2. Shu Uemura Essence Absolute Nourishing Protective Oil: First off, it is sold out worldwide but available at Michael Brothers Hair. Now, the product — it protects, reconstructs, styles and finishes. It’s amazing! When a product “wows” me from the first use, it becomes a staple.
3. John Varvatos: Basically anything he makes — clothes, shoes, outerwear, bags, etc. Casual to dressy, this is Michael Brothers’ style.
4. Starbucks caramel macchiato: Quite possibly could fuel our next endeavor to space. I need at least three daily.
5. SkinMedic: Pam Brewer (owner) is knowledgeable and talented. She has the ability to transform anyone into Benjamin Button. ’Nuff said.
6. Creed fragrance: Cary Grant wore this fragrance. It’s Hollywood in a bottle.
7. Toy Watch: It is a classic revisited, and — let’s face it — it keeps me on time. Great price point.
8. Bliss Body Butter (blood orange + white pepper): This is a necessity.
9. “The Shack”: A book about a man who meets God. It reminds me of how amazing God really is, and presents him in a way I have never heard before. Loved it!
10. Wii: “Ultimate Alliance” 1 and 2: I can’t begin to tell you the hours I have spent saving the world. You may thank me later.
“Although my schedule for the most part is full a year in advance, I always make room for new clients,” he says.
For those who need a more immediate appointment, Brothers can recommend several talented Michael Brothers Hair stylists, all of whom have worked and trained with him personally.
