This Saturday, as part of Comedy Parlor’s News Junkie series, witness the glorious collision of absurdist comedy and local politics as perennial fringe candidate for Tulsa mayor Paul Tay battles City Hall’s favorite social media personality, LaRoy Parks, moderator of the City of Tulsa Parking Enforcement Facebook page and Twitter account (@Tulsa_Parking) in a no-holds-barred debate that promises profane laughs and pot shots at local leaders, if not necessarily substantive policy discussion. Show starts at 8 p.m., tickets are $10 at the door. Visit comedyparlor.com for more info.
I caught up with Austin Bryant (the local comedian behind Parks’ creation) on Facebook messenger and got the scoop on what to expect from he and Tay’s upcoming battle of wits.
Joshua Kline: How did this debate come about?
Austin Bryant: Jackson Nichols (host of News Junkie) asked me to do it. I think he got Paul a show before he got famous for his recent antics, and then he thought, well, let’s let him debate Austin.
JK: Will you be in character as LaRoy Parks?
AB: Yes, I will be.
JK: What do you think of Paul Tay as a potential Tulsa mayor?
AB: I think spells disaster because GT Bynum’s campaign pays me to talk shit on the other candidates.
JK: lol. Are you serious?
AB: Haha no. But in real life I like Bynum. I think that Paul Tay has a disastrous platform. He wants to free the zoo animals and stuff.
JK: What’s your move if Tay approaches you with a roll of duct tape?
AB: I’m pretty sure he’ll need more than duct tape. I’m a big ol’ boy and I am top in my Judo class. I’m also the oldest person in my judo class by about 20 years.
JK: Does this debate mean LaRoy Parks is considering a run for mayor?
AB: That wouldn’t be prudent at this juncture. I am simply defending Tulsa’s honor (from Tay). Austin Bryant plans on a run for office tho. Once a family member retires from the election board. Unlike Vic Regalado, I’m a very ethical person.
I’m gonna tear Paul Tay like a Kleenex in a bucket of snot. Call me the bus driver ‘cause he’s about to go to school. There’s gonna be two hits: me hitting him with the facts, and the mic hitting the floor. [sends a GIF of actor Adam Scott dropping a mic]
