The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, which is owned and managed by the Nature Conservancy, is located in northeastern Oklahoma, near Pawhuska. The Preserve consists of about 35,000 acres of rolling hills at the southern end of the Flint Hills. From atop one of the hills one can view a spectacular panorama of colorful wild flowers and tall bluestem grass and wild rye waving in the breezes. As many as 3,000 American bison graze on the lush grasses, a scene that transports one to a time many years ago when the prairies were teaming with bison and the Native Americans of the Osage tribe mounted on horseback. The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is the largest contiguous managed acreage of tall grass prairie in Oklahoma and one of the largest in the world. The Nature Conservancy is dedicated to restoring it to its original prairie ecosystem. The public is invited to visit the Preserve which is open every day of the year. The Information Center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day except during the period from December 16 through February 28.
