Woody Guthrie may be gone, but this famed native son has continued to make news, especially over the last few months. The announcements started in late December when the Tulsa-based George Kaiser Family Foundation announced that it had purchased the Woody Guthrie Archives from Woody Guthrie Publications in New York and planned to create a permanent home for the collection in the downtown Brady District.
Then information began to be released about a national salute to Guthrie, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday on July 14, 2012. Although many of these events, which include an educational conference at The University of Tulsa and a celebration concert at the Brady Theater, will occur in March, one Guthrie-centric offering begins this weekend.
On Feb. 5, Gilcrease Museum will launch the new exhibition “Woody at One Hundred: The Woody Guthrie Centennial Celebration 1912-2012,” sponsored by the George Kaiser Family Foundation.
The exhibit, curated by The GRAMMY Museum and the Woody Guthrie Archives, features a variety of items from Guthrie’s life and work, including lyrics, journals, original artwork and — perhaps the highlight of the display — Guthrie’s original draft of his best-known song, “This Land is Your Land.” This is the first time the draft will be on display in Oklahoma.
The exhibit will also include a weeklong series of complementary educational programs, and the cast of the musical “Woody Sez” will perform at area elementary schools.
Don’t miss your chance to get an up-close-and-personal look at the work of an Oklahoma native whose passion for social justice left a lasting legacy on the state and beyond.
“Woody at One Hundred: The Woody Guthrie Centennial Celebration 1912-2012” will be on display through April 29. Visit www.gilcrease.utulsa.edu for details.
