Double shot

Double shot

I first heard of the the Old 97’s while watching the film “The Break-Up.”

The band was featured in a concert scene at Chicago’s Riviera Theater in the film staring Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston. I decided to Google them that day and was pleasantly surprised to learn of a band that has earned quite a following and a darn good reputation.

The alternative country band was formed nearly 20 years ago and has recorded a number of albums, including their latest, “The Grand Theatre Volume Two.” Lead singer Rhett Miller wrote much of the music for the two volumes while on a solo tour with Steve Earle, according to the band’s Facebook page.

The band has made a name for itself with its stellar live shows over its years, as well as a number of their songs featured in television shows and movies. The Texas-based band is touring the region in support of this album and will stop in Tulsa on Thursday at Cain’s Ballroom.

Before the Old 97’s take the stage, songstress Caitlin Rose and the band The O’s will perform.

Rose, who draws inspiration from dynamite female singers like Patsy Cline, Stevie Nicks and Linda Ronstadt, claims her music is “steeped in the country tradition” but crosses boundaries with her honest lyrics and songs, according to her website.

Taylor Young and John Pedigo make up The O’s, a band who quite humorously try to define their music on their website. “Well, we sweat too much for a folk band, drink too much for a pop band, and rock too much for a country band.  Our music lies somewhere in between.” Nicely said.

Don’t miss any of these acts as they stop in Tulsa this week. I won’t.
