Celebrity Attractions and Tulsa Performing Arts Center present The Discovery Awards showcasing high school stars.

Celebrity Attractions in partnership with the Tulsa Performing Arts Center is excited to present The Discovery Awards. In its inaugural year, this special regional program highlights and awards excellence in Eastern Oklahoma high school musical theatre and will conclude with a one night only special showcase event Friday, May 24 at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. The best female performer selected and the best male performer selected will represent Oklahoma in New York City at the Jimmy® Awards, otherwise known as The National High School Musical Theatre Awards® in June 2019. Tickets to The Discovery Awards are $25 each and are on sale now.

The Discovery Awards showcase event is co-hosted by Mark Frie, director of the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, and LeAnne Taylor, KOTV News On 6 TV anchor, directed by Tony Award®-winner and Drama Desk Award-winner Faith Prince and choreographed by Tony Award®-nominee and Outer Critics Circle Award-winner Lara Teeter.

Nominees from a total of 14 area Eastern Oklahoma high schools will each have one female nominee and one male nominee selected from their participating musical productions. Participating high schools include: Bishop Kelley, Booker T. Washington, Bristow, Broken Arrow, Edison Preparatory, Enid, Fort Gibson, Jenks, Memorial, Metro Christian Academy, Owasso, Riverfield Country Day School, Sapulpa, and Union.

The nominee selection began in August 2018. A panel of adjudicators comprised of performing arts educators and professionals have been attending all participating high school musical productions throughout the school year. After the season closes, all votes will be tallied and the best female and best male performer from each high school will be announced. These students will take center stage at The Discovery Awards, Friday, May 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.

About the Jimmy Awards

The Jimmy® Awards/The National High School Musical Theatre Awards® (NHSMTA) program impacts more than 100,000 students who participate in high school musical theatre competitions sponsored by presenters of Touring Broadway productions throughout the United States. Presented by the Broadway League Foundation, the program sends a Best Actress and Best Actor winner from each of these competitions to New York for a week-long theatre intensive of coaching and rehearsals with industry professionals in preparation for a one-night-only talent showcase on Broadway. Named for Broadway impresario James M. Nederlander, the program has been the catalyst for more than $2,000,000 in educational scholarships.
