Excited about 'United'

Starting July 21, the always-terrific Tulsa United Film Festival returns to the Circle Cinema and other venues. Here’s a preview, along with a select rundown of movies worth checking out.

One of the all-around best movies I saw in a theater last year, I’m pleased to report, was at the 2010 Tulsa United Film Festival (or TUFF). The movie was "Jeffie was here" a zany and enjoyable comedy/romance/road picture with lots of charm and intelligence going for it.

I say “pleased to report” because, basically, the film had some Tulsa connections in its cast and crew – always nice to see that, especially in top-notch productions – and also because my wife and I saw this film, as I say, at last year’s TUFF. During and after our "Jeffie was here" experience, there was a warm, fun-loving vibe in the theatre – the screening was sold out; the energy was appreciative – and we just both thought it was a wonderful little movie. A great crowd can sometimes make a great difference.

Ergo, I fully anticipate other such great crowd/great movie moments at this year’s TUFF, which kicks off Thursday, July 21, and runs through through Monday, July 25, at the Circle Cinema (near the corner of Admiral and Lewis), with a few additional screenings set to occur at the Ida Red Boutique (3336 South Peoria) and Living Arts of Tulsa (307 East Brady).

Now in its ninth year, TUFF is the brainchild of Tulsa native Jason Connell, a film producer and director based in Hollywood. His production company, Connell Creations, likewise presents “United” film fests in New York, Los Angeles, London, and other cities around the world. I can’t speak firsthand about all those other stellar events, but the “United” shindig they offer in Tulsa is routinely outstanding, year in and year out. A can’t-miss affair, I’d say.

Overall, more than 35 films will be shown at this year’s TUFF, from feature-length indie productions to four- or five-minute homegrown shorts, from world-class documentaries to bona-fide classics like “The Pink Panther” and “The Buddy Holly Story.”

You can get a complete, event-by-event listing of the 2011 TUFF’s offerings here, and you can (and really should) watch trailers for a whopping 15 of those offerings here [http://www.theunitedfest.com/tulsa/trailers.htm].

And herewith, by the by, I offer an admittedly choosy checklist of outstanding coming attractions regarding the forthcoming TUFF.
