Become a Gilcrease docent

Call me an art nerd, but some of the best times of my life were spent at the Fred Jones Museum in Norman sharing about their treasures of art with visitors. I volunteered for several hours a week for three years. I think paintings and other art are meant to be known and contemplated. Consider learning the pleasure of knowing a work of art like a dear friend by becoming a docent at Gilcrease. Start thinking about it now, so you can plan ahead for next fall. The process starts now!

Learn about the unparalleled collection of American art and artifacts at Gilcrease Museum by becoming a Gilcrease Musuem Docent. Docents provide a key service for the Museum by presenting informative and educational tours to the public. The Gillies, the volunteer service organization of Gilcrease Museum, has scheduled Docent Intern training classes from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays beginning September 14, and ending the week of November 4, 2009. Individual mentoring will follow the class sessions. Intern prospects will be scheduled for interviews with senior docents this summer. Training will include comprehensive background on the Museum’s permanent collection, as well as public speaking and tour management. This opportunity is perfect for those that love to interact with the public, especially with school children. For more information, contact vice president Sondra Mullins at (918) 296-5064.
